Short Circuit (Combine) by Rauschenberg

Have been doing quite a bit of research lately into Jasper Johns and his personal and public biographies in connection with an upcoming gallery show of another 50s/60s artist… and when I encountered this Rauschenberg image today in the New Yorker, as part of the promotion for the current Gagosian show, I was completely bowled over. As a long-time fan of Rauschenberg I was shocked at how completely personal the work is. Typically his pieces are more coded or ironic and yet here so much of Rauschenberg, and his personal concerns, are on display. Nice to be surprised, again, by an artist’s work from 55 years ago.
